Meet the new BMW X1! It’s the entry-level SUV in BMW’s line-up, and Mat’s about to find out if it’s the must-have choice compared to other premium small SUVs. For starters, this may be the smallest BMW SUV around, but it’s seemingly grown in size compared to the previous edition. If anything, it looks more like an X3! There have been a number of other design changes too, from a bigger grille up front and a redesigned front and rear bumper. There are a number of other, smaller touches as well, including flush door handles on either side. Step inside and just like any BMW, you’re treated to a high-quality interior. There are good quality, soft-touch materials across the dash and the top of the doors, and the centre console is comfortable and well laid out. There’s lots of storage to be found throughout the cabin, and the infotainment screen & digital dials are pretty smart, too. Overall it’s a pretty good experience in the X1, although there are some annoying bits of plastic to be found on the steering wheel! There are a couple of petrol and diesel engines to choose from, with the range-topper currently a 2-litre turbo petrol that can deliver 218hp. However, there’s more choice coming in the future, including two plug-in hybrids as well as an all-electric edition, the iX1! For the latest BMW X1 pricing and information: 🤍 This is the new redesigned BMW X1, an entry-level subcompact luxury SUV that’s come a long way. It’s now longer, wider, and looks sportier, almost like a shrunken version of its larger sibling the X5 and that’s not a bad thing. Its brawny and boxy look gives it a proper SUV appearance than that raised wagon look seen in previous generations. There’s only one model of the X1 and that’s the xDrive28i, and yes the xDrive means all wheel drive is standard. What’s not standard is the M Sport package that we have on our tester here which I think makes the X1 look great. The grille is blacked out WITH functional grille shutters for aerodynamics, you get sportier bumpers, adaptive suspension, and these wheels and paint job are optional, but they look great. Along with the boxy dimensions there's a lot to like about the X1. Those boxy dimensions translate to some very workable cargo room. There’s 25.7 cu-ft behind the second row and folding down the 40-20-40 split seats increases cargo capacity to 57.2 cubic feet. Having some functions integrated into the touchscreen isn’t my cup of tea, and there’s no longer a knob to control the iDrive system so you’ll interact with the touchscreen to operate certain functions, but hey look on the bright side! The system looks clear, is intuitive and easy to operate, there’s this ledge you can use to place screen inputs, and there’s wireless phone charging with a small piece to prevent your phone from falling over, WITH some space below for slim items like a bag or some snacks. The X1 delivers 241 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque from a 2.0L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine linked to a dual clutch transmission. As an improvement from last generation, the bump in power translates to peppy acceleration and the fun driving nature you’d come to expect from a BMW. The power in the X1 feels more than adequate and the shifts from the dual-clutch transmission are quick, however this start stop function is not the smoothest. You can disable it in the iDrive system but you must do that once every time you start the car, and when you're accelerating off the line, there's a little bit of lag. But when you get it up to speed, everything feels fine. There's also sport mode which changes throttle response steering feel and hold your gears longer if you want a more spirited ride, and some added sound pumped inside the cabin. And just for fun, the M Sport package includes paddle shifters and a BOOST mode which puts this in its most aggressive setting for roughly 10 seconds. The AWD system works great on the X1. Through corners the small SUV feels composed and balanced, and the lack of body roll gives the driver more confidence to have more fun with sharp turns. Even though this SUV looks more SUV’ish, the driving dynamics feels almost hot-hatch’ish. Those are words, look them up. As far as fuel figures go, the X1 gets 25 city / 34 highway. The steering with the X1 is nice and precise and I like the way the steering wheel feels, but the Adaptive suspension that comes with our M Sport package does make the ride a little bit firmer and there’s some road and wind noise coming into the cabin. Pricing for the X1 now starts at ($38,600) plus a destination charge, and that includes 18-inch wheels, LED lighting, power tailgate, dual zone climate control, synthetic leather seating, usb-c ports, and large curved display. For different styling aesthetics there’s xLine and M sport packages, and a long list of stand-alone features and optional packages which include larger 20 inch wheels, keyless entry, heated front seats and steering wheel, Panoramic sunroof 12-speaker audio system, head up display, and remote start. The 3rd generation of the BMW X1 is a KBB best buy award winner for a reason. The 2023 model has received a complete redesign that looks to be a comprehensive upgrade over last year’s model, with improvements to its chassis, powertrain, and interior. A new 241-hp turbocharged four-cylinder engine is under the hood and is paired with standard all-wheel drive and a seven-speed automatic transmission. Unlike its main rival, the Mercedes-Benz GLB-class, the X1 remains a two-row SUV, but its slightly larger exterior dimensions have translated to extra space inside the cabin according to BMW. Speaking of the interior, it’s updated with a more modern design and the latest tech features, including the brand’s iDrive 8 infotainment setup. What's New for 2023? BMW has redesigned the X1 SUV for 2023. A more powerful four-cylinder engine resides behind a bolder dual-kidney grille. Its larger exterior dimensions promise slightly more interior space for passengers and cargo than the previous generation offered. Pricing and Which One to Buy xDrive28i: $39,595 This time around there’s only one trim to choose from, and it comes with standard all-wheel drive; the front-wheel drive sDrive28i version isn’t continuing on into the new generation. It’s possible a higher-performance M-badged model could be in the wings, but for now, the X1 gets only an M Sport equipment package that adds exclusive visual cues and an adaptive M suspension. The xDrive28i comes with plenty of standard equipment, but we’d suggest adding the optional Convenience package, which includes keyless entry, a panoramic sunroof, auto-dimming mirrors, and a wireless smartphone charging pad. Engine, Transmission, and Performance Like the outgoing model, the 2023 X1 is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, but the new model boasts 241 horsepower, 13 more than before. All-wheel drive is standard this time around and the X1 also receives a new seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. The X1 xDrive28i we tested, shot to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds. Its redesigned suspension improves handling and stability, which makes the X1 a fun drive for twisty roads. An optional M Sport package—don’t get this confused with an M model, which may come later—adds performance-enhancing features such as an adaptive suspension system and steering-wheel-mounted shift paddles. The M Sport package also adds more aggressively bolstered seats, a unique steering wheel, and several sporty-looking exterior tweaks. Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG The EPA estimates that the 2023 X1 should deliver 25 mpg city and 34 mpg highway, which is slightly better than the 2022 model in both metrics. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo The 2023 model is slightly longer, taller, and wider than the outgoing 2022 X1, delivering only minor increases in passenger space as the previous model was already roomy for its size. The interior design is more modern this time around with a toggle-switch shift lever, a floating center console, an all-digital dashboard, and designer elements such as textured speaker grilles. All models come with dual-zone automatic climate control, ambient interior lighting, and a power liftgate. A panoramic sunroof is part of the optional Convenience package while heated front seats and a heated steering wheel are standalone options. Infotainment and Connectivity BMW has integrated its latest iDrive 8 infotainment system into its smallest SUV. Like the larger iX electric SUV and the flagship 7-series sedan, the X1’s digital dashboard is a crisp-looking single panel that serves as both a gauge display and an infotainment screen. Navigation is standard, as are Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; SiriusXM satellite radio is also offered on all models. A wireless smartphone charging pad is part of the optional Convenience package and the Premium package adds a head-up display, a Harman/Kardon stereo system, and a 360-degree exterior camera system. The BMW X1 has some big changes to combat the tough competition for compact luxury SUV supremacy. Under the hood is a 2.0L turbocharged inline-4 that is producing 228HP & mated to a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission. Power is delivered to the ground via BMW's xDrive AWD system. It's exterior receives some updates such as grill, front fascia, and wheels. On the inside you will fins some welcome tech changes plus some great fit and finish.
