Did you know that the Stratofortress' ability to stay in the air for so long depends on the endurance of its crew members? Life aboard The B-52H is considered tough and exhausting by pilots. The aircraft is refueled from the air, air pressure can drop, requiring crew members to wear oxygen masks, and pilots must wear night vision goggles during night operations. Life on board a B-52H Stratofortress can be challenging, as it is a military aircraft and the crew members are expected to perform their duties to the highest standards. Let’s take a look inside the $84 million B-52H "Stratofortress". As you may know, the B-52H Stratofortress is a long-range, heavy bomber aircraft that has been in service with the United States Air Force since the 1950s. It is known for its versatility and has been used in a variety of missions, including air-to-surface attacks, air-to-air refueling, and strategic bombing. The B-52H Stratofortress is a massive aircraft, with a wingspan of over 185 feet and a length of 159 feet. It is powered by eight jet engines and can reach speeds of up to 650 mph. The B-52H Stratofortress is also equipped with a variety of weapons, including bombs, missiles, and mines. It can carry up to 70,000 pounds of payload, making it one of the most heavily armed aircraft in the world. The living quarters on a B-52H Stratofortress are cramped, as the aircraft has limited space. The crew members sleep in small bunk beds and have access to a small kitchen and bathroom area. At 7:43pm, the Hoa Lac Airfield, located only 15 miles west of the North Vietnamese capital city, was impacted. For the next 12 days, the theory and viability of American high-altitude strategic bombardment would be put to the test once more, aiming for some of the most heavily defended targets in the history of aerial warfare, even to this day. In an attempt to force the North Vietnamese into returning to the negotiating table, Operation Linebacker II employed air power to its maximum capabilities, targeting radio stations, railroads, power plants, and airfields. The Boeing B-52 Stratofortress is an American long-range, subsonic, jet-powered strategic bomber. The B-52 was designed and built by Boeing, which has continued to provide support and upgrades. It has been operated by the United States Air Force (USAF) since the 1950s. The bomber is capable of carrying up to 70,000 pounds (32,000 kg) of weapons,[2] and has a typical combat range of more than 8,800 miles (14,080 km) without aerial refueling. Beginning with the successful contract bid in June 1946, the B-52 design evolved from a straight wing aircraft powered by six turboprop engines to the final prototype YB-52 with eight turbojet engines and swept wings. The B-52 took its maiden flight in April 1952. Built to carry nuclear weapons for Cold War-era deterrence missions, the B-52 Stratofortress replaced the Convair B-36 Peacemaker. A veteran of several wars, the B-52 has dropped only conventional munitions in combat. The B-52's official name Stratofortress is rarely used; informally, the aircraft has become commonly referred to as the BUFF (Big Ugly Fat Fucker/Fella). The B-52 has been in service with the USAF since 1955. As of June 2019, there are 76 aircraft in inventory; 58 operated by active forces (2nd Bomb Wing and 5th Bomb Wing), 18 by reserve forces (307th Bomb Wing), and about 12 in long-term storage at the Davis-Monthan AFB Boneyard. The bombers flew under the Strategic Air Command (SAC) until it was disestablished in 1992 and its aircraft absorbed into the Air Combat Command (ACC); in 2010, all B-52 Stratofortresses were transferred from the ACC to the new Air Force Global Strike Command (AFGSC). Superior performance at high subsonic speeds and relatively low operating costs have kept them in service despite the advent of later, more advanced strategic bombers, including the Mach 2+ B-58 Hustler, the canceled Mach 3 B-70 Valkyrie, the variable-geometry B-1 Lancer, and the stealth B-2 Spirit. The B-52 completed 60 years of continuous service with its original operator in 2015. After being upgraded between 2013 and 2015, the last airplanes are expected to serve into the 2050s. When the B-52 entered into service, the Strategic Air Command (SAC) intended to use it to deter and counteract the vast and modernizing Soviet Union's military. As the Soviet Union increased its nuclear capabilities, destroying or "countering" the forces that would deliver nuclear strikes (bombers, missiles, etc.) became of great strategic importance. The Eisenhower administration endorsed this switch in focus; the President in 1954 expressed a preference for military targets over civilian ones, a principle reinforced in the Single Integrated Operation Plan (SIOP), a plan of action in the case of nuclear war breaking out. Throughout the Cold War, B-52s and other US strategic bombers performed airborne alert patrols under code names such as Head Start, Chrome Dome, Hard Head, Round Robin and Giant Lance. Bombers loitered at high altitude near the borders of the Soviet Union to provide rapid first strike or retaliation capability in case of nuclear war. These airborne patrols formed one component of the US's nuclear deterrent, which would act to prevent the breakout of a large-scale war between the US and the Soviet Union under the concept of Mutually Assured Destruction. The B-52s (styled as The B-52's prior to 2008) are an American new wave band formed in Athens, Georgia, in 1976. The original line-up consisted of Fred Schneider (vocals, percussion), Kate Pierson (vocals, keyboards), Cindy Wilson (vocals, percussion), Ricky Wilson (guitar), and Keith Strickland (drums, guitar, keyboards). Ricky Wilson died from AIDS-related illness in 1985, and Strickland switched from drums to lead guitar. The band also added touring members for albums and live performances. This song was recently covered by Juno Birch, a confused alien housewife from the ‘60s with over 200,000 Instagram followers. Juno Birch, who looks like she just fell out of the sky and is trying to blend in as a human, is a drag artist with one of the most unique styles attached to her name.
